ILCEC2019 is organized in a building with history, the Philips NATLAB. It is the original building of Philips Research Laboratories founded in 1914 by Gilles Holst, the world-renowned inventor of the low-pressure sodium lamp. The building was also the home of many other Philips Inventions such as the compact disc, the magnetic cassette tape and the IC LOCOS technology and was visited by many famous scientists including Albert Einstein in 1923. Also, at Philips Research the liquid crystal network technology was developed in 1985. Initially to function as low thermal expansion coating for optical telecommunication fibers. Later very successfully for optical film improving liquid crystal displays on their viewing performance.
